pumpkin protein shake

Isn’t this just the cutest lil thing??
pumpkin protein shake
I put on a few pounds celebrating my birthday for a week even though I’ve been hitting the gym consistently. I don’t want to be one of those people that blames it on their age but it’s a cold hard fact. Soooo, in trying not to indulge in any Halloween candy, I made us a pumpkin protein shake to stay on the healthy route.
pumpkin protein shake
It’s not a pumpkin spice protein shake. It’s not a pumpkin pie protein shake(even though I initially made one but couldn’t get the flavoring quite right). This is just a very simple pumpkin shake.

I decorated the inside of the glass with sugar free chocolate syrup for the eyes and mouth. I initially was going to use Nutella but then remembered that Mikey banished all nutella from the house. Apparently he has late night control issues and after I go to bed, he stays up for a bit longer and eats WHOLE jars of nutella. And then proceeds to blame me because I do the grocery shopping. Excuse me?? Let’s not even talk about the 2 bags of mini Hershey bars with almonds and 1 bag of peppermint patties. No wait, let’s talk about it. I received those from a friend as part of a larger gift and there’s an inside joke with the Hershey bars. After 2 nights of Mikey breaking into the bags and eating half, he informed me that I had to get rid of them immediately or he was throwing them away. So I took the bags of candy to the bar when I was working and set them out with the Taco bar we have on Tuesdays. They were gone in a flash. Apparently Mikey isn’t the only one with self control issues.

1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1 TBL maple syrup
1/2 frozen banana
1 cup almond milk
1/2 scoop (or 1 whole scoop) natural unflavored protein powder
(you can also substitute plain greek yogurt)
Place all ingredients in a blender with 3/4 cup of ice. Blend until smooth. Optional pumpkin face on inside of glass made with chocolate syrup or nutella(if you’re allowed to have any in your house).

Can you tell I was having way too much fun with mini pumpkins and chalk board tags??

what up wednesdays

just a few things I’ve been up to lately…..

1. Of course I just have to start off with The Walking Dead. After 6 months and about 15 minutes, finally we find out who Negan killed. I don’t want to ruin anything by being specific because there’s a certain someone who is behind and not caught up on season 6. Soooo, I just have to say that it was still a nail biter of an episode because I wasn’t sure if Rick was having flash backs and then the next day I read a recap that said they were flash forwards and now I’m all scared again. It was just so gruesome. I mean I’m so used to the zombie killing that it doesn’t bother me anymore, but that shit on sunday was just too much. And that last scene where Rick is imagining all of them sitting down for dinner. Oh the tears. Damn you Walking Dead.
2. On a lighter TV note, Danielle finally agreed to a divorce instead of an annulment on 90 day fiancé. Ok sorry, I just had to throw that in so I would stop thinking about #1 above. Oh Oh, almost forgot- we finished Ray Donovan over the weekend. Not sure what it was about the first 6 episodes that we just weren’t that into, but the last 6 episodes were really good and I’m glad we finished watching the show. My parents don’t have Showtime so they bought the first 3 seasons on dvd Ray Donovan: The First Season and became totally addicted.
3. Last week for 1 last birthday celebration, myself, Trixie, and Elaine who turned 40+1 went to the movies and then out for a bite to eat. And drinks of course. We saw The Girl on the Train and it was so very good. I mean like really really good. It made the book The Girl on the Train better because of the actors. All of the actors. Especially Emily Blunt because when I read the book I had a hard time liking the main character but Emily Blunt does such a good job that I changed my mind. I very rarely ever say I like a movie as much as the book but this is most definitely one of those times. The only other time I recall saying that is Cold Mountain. Loved the book Cold Mountain , loved the movie Cold Mountain . But yes, I highly recommend seeing The Girl on the Train. Even if you haven’t read the book. Plus it had been a minute since I read the book and I kind of forgot some of the things that happened.

Failed candy corn protein shake
Failed candy corn protein shake

This was an epic failure of a candy corn protein shake I spent about an hour trying to make. The sad thing was that I couldn’t even get it to taste good. Wah!
And then this happened not once but TWICE!

I broke my shoes!!
I broke my shoes!!

I wish I could say it was from a wild night of dancing and partying for my birthday. But I can’t. I was cleaning while wearing the ones with the little heel and cooking in the ones with the big heel and they just fell apart on me. Cheap shoes obviously but they were 2 comfortable pairs and I’m pissed they broke. Double WAH!!

Candy bar shots!!!

It’s adult trick or treating!!!
candy bar shots
I mean seriously. How fun is this? I sure had fun taste testing all the shots. They may not perfectly taste exactly like the candy but they are delicious nonetheless. It’s perfect for your adult Halloween party.
candy bar shots
How can you go wrong with ingredients like crème de cocoa, irish cream, hazelnut, butterscotch, just to name a few. This is one of those times that I recommend drinking your calories instead of eating them.
candy bar shots
Plus there’s always this snickers martini that you could turn into a shot as well….just in case you need more candy bar shots. And in case you invite me to your party. Snickers is my favorite candy bar. Growing up it was always Kit Kat bars. I would hide them from my sister after Trick or Treating. Actually, I hid all of my candy from her or I would offer up mallo cups because I hated that kind. My sister always shared her candy with me but I never wanted to share mine with her. Yes, I’m greedy but I blame it on being the second born and having to use all of her hand me downs. So when I got things of my own, I didn’t want to share anything. But I would share these candy bar shots with my sister! They’re too cute not to share.

Cuba Libre

Say hello to your new drink of the day…..
cuba libre
Something new I thought I would try here on the blog. Mainly because I found the cool little chalkboard at Target a few months ago and I thought “oh wow! look it already says happy hour so I’ll just add the itsmy .com.” I’m so brilliant. HA HAHA.
Also, I thought it would be cool to take a classic or popular drink and feature it as “the drink of the day.”
cuba libre
The cuba libre is a classic cocktail dating back over 100 years. The inspiration for this drink came from a Cocktail Calendar I have hanging in my office. The month of August the drink was a cuba libre and I remembered that I had actually made one before at work bartending. There was only 1 other person in the whole bar besides the girl that ordered the drink, who knew what a cuba libre was. And both of them were former bartenders. In all honesty, you probably have had this drink before and didn’t even know it. It’s rum and cola with lime. So simple, I know. But it’s the ratio and measurements that make the drink. It’s not just a rum and cola with a slice of lime.
cuba libre
I’m going to get really annoying and tell you that the inspiration for the drink also came from the name of the drink and the fact that it’s my birthday week. I’m a Libra. It’s a cuba Libre. Get it??
cuba libre
Cuba Libre
2 oz light or dark rum (I used light)
1 oz fresh lime juice
cola- amount depending on how big your glass is.
Fill a glass with ice. Pour in rum then lime juice and top with cola. Give drink a slight stir and garnish with a lime wedge.
cuba libre
Get all fancy pants at your next get together and tell everyone your serving cuba libre’s. See how long before they figure out it’s just a rum and cola with lime. Hehe.

what up wednesdays

just a few things I’ve been up to lately…..

I’m celebrating my birthday all week, so I’ve been a little busy…
1. Friday was a “happy hour” at my parents house with my sister and brother-in-law. Dark rum and coke was the drink du jour. My dad made homemade Italian beef sandwiches and my mom made the most delicious cupcakes, some regular size and some mini ones. Chocolate with chocolate icing and gingerbread with cream cheese icing. We absolutely devoured them.
2. Saturday Mikey took me out to dinner at a local Italian restaurant that I have been dying to try for a few years. They make their pasta on site and at the end of the meal they give you a shot of limoncello and an amaretti cookie. We were too full to even try dessert but I hear their Tiramisu is awesome.
3. Party animals that we are, we were home fairly early. We were going to find a good movie to watch on TV but I picked up a book my mom gave me and I couldn’t put it down. Literally, just wanted to finish it that night. It’s called Tempting Fate: A Novel by Jane Green. And all I can say is please do not under any circumstance read the ending. One review(Kirkus Reviews) called it “the Scarlet Letter for the 21st century.”
4. Sunday I made my pot roast nachos with shrimp and goat cheese queso. After throwing the pot roast in the crockpot early, I sat outside in the beautiful 75 degree October weather reading the above mentioned book.
5. My plans with a friend I haven’t seen in months fell through for today but tomorrow I’m going with my girls Trixie and Elaine who turned 40+1 to see “Girl on a Train” and cocktails afterward. I CANNOT WAIT!!!!
6. TV talk- ok so I know I said I’m over The Walking Dead but of course I’m still going to watch it. So there I was Sunday night, getting all prepared to turn it on and then I find out that it starts next week instead. I’m all like what the???? I was kind of pissed and really confused because I could have sworn season 7 started the day after my birthday. Somewhere along the line, they changed it on me. I’m not insane either because last night a work, some friends I hadn’t seen in months, said the exact same thing. They were just as confused and pissed as I was.
