Now this is how to do a post workout shake!

Would you believe that I never ate a banana split? I really don’t think I ever have. I actually had to google banana split just to be sure of what ingredients are in one. My guess was right. Besides bananas duh, strawberries, chocolate fudge, pineapples, chopped nuts…For my shake I used crunchy peanut butter to mimic the chppped nuts. You could totally use regular peanut butter and garnish your shake with chopped nuts. Or you could leave it out altogether.

I made this shake for Mikey and I after a particularly grueling yet quick workout. I had a busy weird week and pretty much put my workouts on the back burner. So we did an all encompassing full body workout. Four sets of squats, four sets of pull-ups, four sets of dips, and finished it up with kettlebell swings. Very fast but super effective. And it felt good just to get some kind of a workout in.

These banana split protein shakes were just perfect for our post workout. Plus it was 80 something degrees out, very humid, and we had yet to get our air conditioners put in and running(we just have window units). So these shakes were very cold and refreshing! And super tasty!

(serves 2)
1 banana
1/2 cup sliced strawberries
1/2 cup chopped pineapple
1 Tbl crunchy peanutbutter
1 scoop chocolate protein powder
1 1/2 cups almond milk (or milk of your choice)
1 1/2 cups ice
chocolate syrup
Place first 7 ingredients in a blender and blend well. Garnish glass with a banana, strawberry, and pineapple wedge. Top off shake and fruit with drizzle of chocolate syrup.
Just a side note-if you are not into protein powder, a good substitute is greek yogurt. For chocolate protein powder use 1 cup greek yogurt and 1 Tbl cocoa powder.

sunday suppers- pasta salad

Tonight’s sunday suppers is brought to you by pasta salad. Gluten-free pasta salad of course. And I’m happy to tell you that it turned out way better than I expected. Ha. It’s the perfect picnic food! I found some gluten free rotini pasta at my favorite store in all the land-Aldi. I made sure to cook it exactly for seven minutes like the package told me to and it didn’t come out soggy. Hooray! I was seriously worried about it though because as soon as I was told to go gluten-free, I immediately thought of all the things I couldn’t eat. My award winning pies to name the first thing but DO NOT get me started on that subject. But I did think of this pasta salad because it became a staple of mine to take to picnics. Everyone (namely Elaine who turned 40) would ask me to make this pasta salad for any kind of get together. Now I don’t have to be a disappointment to everybody and tell them I can’t make the pasta salad because it’s not gluten-free. Have I mentioned I’m having a bit of difficulty with this whole gluten-free bullshit?

So when I make my pasta salad it’s basically whatever vegetables I like plus cheese and mini turkey pepperoni. And salad supreme. That’s the key ingredient. Plus I use a zesty Italian dressing.

A lot of people put tomatoes, onions, and peppers in their pasta salads. I however, do not. Tomatoes if I’m taking it to a picnic. Otherwise, I don’t like peppers or onions in my pasta salad and I had a bad experience with cherry tomatoes once and now I’m scarred for life. The possibilities are endless though. Sometimes chopped carrots or chopped zucchini. Or even chopped cauliflower…What’s your favorite additions????

Pasta salad (gluten free)
1 lb rotini pasta (regular or gluten free)
1 cup mini turkey pepperoni
1 cup cubed Colby jack cheese
1 cup chopped cucumber
1 cup chopped broccoli
1/2 cup sliced black olives
1 bottle zesty Italian dressing
3 Tbl salad supreme (this is the key ingredient!!!)
Cook rotini according to package directions. Drain and cool. Add next 7 ingredients and combine. Refrigerate for about 3 hours or overnight.

So Mikey is a wee bit younger than I am, but can you believe he told me that he doesn’t remember ever listening to Prince. What? Who are you? Is that even possible? Maybe he just doesn’t remember listening to Prince. He remembers watching Beverly Hills 90210 when his cousin babysat him, so I’m sure they had to have listened to Prince, right? I used to LOVE Prince. I still have his 3-CD greatest hits collection. I should make Mikey listen to it on our next road trip. Hehe.

This pretty purple martini kind of reminds me of a cosmopolitan which is vodka, orange liqueur, and cranberry juice with a lime. In this purple martini I used orange vodka, cranberry juice, lime juice, and Blue Maui schnapps. The cranberry juice and blue maui make the drink the pretty purple color. I know, like you don’t already know that red and blue make purple. I remember Blue Maui and Sprite being one of the first alcoholic drinks I used to sneak besides the beer and Jack Daniels Elaine and I would steal from our parents. I think my sister had a bottle of Blue Maui after she turned 21 and she let me have some of it. Because it’s a schnapps, the alcohol content is lower than most other kinds of alcohols. So it’s sort of a “girly” or “sissy” drink. Like a Fuzzy Navel(peach schnapps and oj). I used to be such a lightweight, even after I turned 21. And then life happened and becoming a grown up happened and becoming besties with Trixie and Melissa happened and now I can drink like a champ. HAHA! Ok, not really.

(serves 1)
2 oz orange vodka
1 1/2 oz Blue Maui
2 oz cranberry juice
1/2 oz lime juice
Pour all ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake well. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a lime wedge optional.

just a few things I’ve been up to lately…..
Oh Chipotle, how do I love thee…

5. I haven’t gotten sick yet eating it!

We planted our garden! Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant(Mikey’s choice), and pumpkins(also Mikey’s choice). Also planted my pineapple mint, chocolate mint, oregano, and sage. I forgot to buy basil. Hope I can still find some. Also need to plant some flowers too. I just love this time of year!!

TV talk- Game of Thrones…Oh poor Hodor! We were watching the hockey game sunday night so we didn’t watch GOT until Monday night. But on Monday morning, I couldn’t help myself and read all about GOT on the internet and boy I’m glad I did. It prepared me and I didn’t cry too much. Poor Hodor. We have 1 episode of Billions left that we will probably watch tonight. Wish that show didn’t have to end.

Peaches and “green” protein shake

Did you notice my play on words? Instead of peaches and cream it’s peaches and “green.” The “green” as in spinach. And of course if you don’t like protein powder you could substitute yogurt and call it a smoothie.

With summer right around the corner, I get all excited for the sunshine and warm weather and it makes me want to go on long walks several times a day, kill it at the gym, and eat healthier and all that happy shit. Of course it’s also because I suddenly remember that I’ll be wearing shorts and a bathing suit soon too.
So when I mentioned to Mikey that I was making a peaches and green protein shake and that I had enough to share, he was all like “umm, no thanks.” But then he had a taste, and drank the whole thing.

I’ll admit that I was a little bit leery if this would taste good. But trust me, it’s really really good. And with the spinach that’s in it, I actually had no desire to add rum to it like I do with most protein shakes I make. Haha.

10 sliced peaches (I used frozen)
1 cup fresh spinach
1 scoop vanilla protein powder(or 1 cup vanilla greek yogurt)
1 cup ice
1 cup almond milk (or any milk)
Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

It’s green people! It’s gotta be healthy! And it actually tastes good! What more could you ask for?
