Tonight’s sunday suppers is brought to you by my 14lb turkey that I took out of the oven at 9:30 pm on thanksgiving. Along with homemade gravy. And homemade mashed potatoes. I impressed myself. Now the stuffing on the other hand was from a bag (box). I also made pickled eggs and beets. And yes all of this was done at 9:30 pm on thanksgiving. We ate later than I thought with family so by the time we got home and digested and relaxed, I didn’t put the turkey in til about 5:30. The 14lb turkey for 2 by the way. I wanted an insane amount of leftovers. I am embarrassed to say that they are almost gone 3 days later. For real. Because I have been making my version of a gobblerito.
Take a scoop of all your leftovers (turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, stuffing) and throw it in a flour tortilla, fold sides over and flip it on plate and cover it in gravy.
I planned on eating leftovers all week so I didn’t buy any other food. Oops. Seriously, our leftovers are almost gone because we can’t stop eating these turkey burritos.
I’m a pie whore. After going blah, blah, blah all month long about not baking 100+ pies, I went ahead and made 20. Maybe that makes me a pie pimp instead. The bottom left pie is the no pecan- pecan pie I talked about yesterday. The top right pie is a chocolate pudding pie with plastic wrap on top to prevent that weird skin from forming on top. There’s also apple, pumpkin, redberry cherry, blackberry, and a baby peach pie. That’s all mine because my peach (and my mom’s) is my favorite. Am I making you hungry for delicious homemade award winning pie yet???? Pie whore.
Then I also went ahead and made 40 pumpkin rolls with cream cheese filling. I made these at my parents house because of the whole kitty cats issue. I hate making pumpkin rolls. I always forget that. They are easy to make but insanely time consuming and messy. Oh the powdered sugar. I had to promise my mom I would scrub her kitchen floors when I was done baking there. Many years ago when I first made pumpkin rolls I was still living at home. I had powdered sugar everywhere. I mean in the freezer, in the refrigerator, all over the floors and cabinets. I scarred her for life. For real. Poor woman.
TV talk- The Walking Dead. Glenn is alive!!! And the mid season finale is this week. WAH! I don’t wanna wait. We are having a Harry Potter movie marathon tomorrow on thanksgiving. Stuff our faces all day long and watch Harry Potter because I never watched them before. I actually wanted to read the books first but I’m going to just watch the movies instead. I have like 50 books my mom gave me to read.
Happy Thanksgiving everybody! Hope you have a wonderful holiday!!
Not a fan of pecan pie? Well I highly recommend you try this pecan pie martini. And if you do like pecan pie well you are going to just love this martini. You can nibble on the nuts while you drink. It’s like a snack and a drink all in one. It’s like dessert too! It’s an all encompassing cocktail. I have only recently the past few years been making pecan pies. I surprised myself with how much I actually like them. Gooey, sticky, sweet, and yet a crunchy texture of the pecans. It’s hard to overeat pecan pie too because of the sweetness. I had to make a pecan pie without the pecans for a friend of mine. Apparently when her kids were growing up they vacationed somewhere in canada and every year they bought these cookie things that had a filling that tasted like pecan pie without the pecans. She asked me if I would make a pie with just the “goop” and no nuts. I thought she was fucking nuts. But I tried it and she said it was great. Don’t worry though, this martini doesn’t taste like “goop” just because the nuts are on the outside.
pecan pie martini
3 oz vanilla vodka
2 oz maple syrup
2 oz milk
1 Tbl finely chopped pecans
Rim glass with maple syrup then dip in finely chopped pecans. In a shaker with ice add vodka, maple syrup, and milk. Shake well and strain into glass. Garnish with 2 pecan pieces floating on top for prettiness.
This weeks sunday suppers is an abridged version. I’m not making as much due to thanksgiving being on Thursday. I am going to attempt a small thanksgiving dinner for me and my boyfriend. Embarrassingly enough, I don’t really know how to make thanksgiving dinner. Like one time many years ago I tried an 18 pound turkey and almost caught the oven on fire. I’ve always either worked on thanksgiving or worked the night before and just mooched dinner off of family. So this year I’m attempting a smaller version and still mooching off of family. The only reason I’m doing a meal myself is because I want an insane amount of leftovers and the family is eating really early. Oh, and because I’m not baking 100+ pies this year so I have a little bit of time to prepare some things and shop for the ingredients. Scalloped potatoes from a box, gravy in a jar, stuffing in a bag…you know, the essentials. I don’t think I’ve ever made mashed potatoes either. Holy shit I suck!!! And the fact that I’m admitting this all to you means I’m insane too!!! I have made gravy from scratch and I’m going to try it again but I’ll buy a jar just in case it doesn’t turn out right. One of the leftovers I’m going to make is an item we order from a local tex-mex restaurant called a gobblerito. It’s turkey, stuffing, corn, and mashed potatoes all wrapped in a flour tortilla and covered in gravy. It is so freaking good and they only have it for like 2 months out of the year. I can’t decide what to drink on thanksgiving. Probably cranberry wine because I don’t eat cranberry sauce. That makes up for it right? A local winery by my house makes a really good cranberry wine called “sauced.” Tonight’s sunday supper is steak salads. Keeping it healthy before the pants popping holidays begin ya know. I have to keep the salads away from cats. They never act like they care what we’re eating or pay any attention. I mean they’re cats not dogs. But apparently they both like salads and everytime I eat one (from Texas Roadhouse) they come over and and lick it. I then throw it away of course!! I always think they’re just being curious and looking at it and sniffing it and then they try to eat it. Gross but funny. TMI too? haha sorry.
And just because I feel like this post needs a picture…..
I know, I know. It’s the most basic of cocktails. Doesn’t even require a recipe. Take some apple cider and heat it up and add some bourbon. Get your fuzzy blanket, candle, fireplace, good book/movie, etc… sip and enjoy. Mulled apple cider works just as well. It just screams the holiday season. Oh, and don’t forget to add your apple slices and cinnamon sticks because that just screams coolness and sophistication which is what we all are right? Cool and sophisticated.
The weather yesterday was like 65 degrees. We went for a walk at the lake and saw turtles and ducks swimming. I don’t know why I thought it was funny to see a turtle swimming in the lake. I only ever saw them sunning themselves on the rocks. Ok, call me weird. But today the cold front moves in and all I want to do is make this cocktail and do nothing. It’s like a good pregame before the crazy holiday week coming up and the equally if not more crazier month that follows. So instead of prepping for the pregame, I want to do nothing. Makes sense. I’m the queen of procrastination after all.
I’m sorry if these pics appear blurry. Or maybe I just had too much bourbon to drink????
